Getting IPLDay proclaimed

Calgary’s Mayor Nenshi has officially proclaimed October 13, 2012 International Plain Language Day. Last year Vancouver proclaimed it, in a process that only took a couple of weeks. This year we are encouraging you, wherever you are, to get official proclamation. Why?

It is all about publicity and recognition. When a government – at any level – proclaims an event, the search value, marketability and promotions options grow. The more people talk about it, on their websites, social media platforms and news releases, the more coverage it – and you as the organizer – will get. It adds a ‘newsworthy’ value to the publicity you give IPLDay.

Getting an official government – civic, regional or national – proclamation is different for each body. The request also takes different amounts of time – so earlier is better. Simply put the government body’s name and the word proclamation and links on how to apply should appear.

If they don’t, contact the body and ask. Front line staff will be able to direct you. Best of luck. If you have tips on getting a proclamation, or have one, please use the Comments to share.

What is International Plain Language Day?

From Cheryl Stephens and Kate Harrison Whiteside

We are advocates for plain language who have been active in building the plain language movement for nearly 25 years.

We have set October 13 as International Plain Language Day. This annual event celebrates the work that is being done around the globe to bring clear communications to everyone. We decided to launch this event after seeing the great success experienced in building the LinkedIn Group Plain Language Advocates.

2011 was the first IPLDay and it was enjoyed by many around the world. You can see what happened last year by visiting our page at Facebook.com/InternationalPlainLanguageDay.

This year we will add an online component, which we will organize, to the local events.

In 2012 we are going to use visual media – YouTube and SlideShare – to share ideas, tips, and activities so we can all learn and advance this important movement.
